FIGMENT DC catalyzes and celebrates an abundance of creativity and passion, challenging artists and our communities to find new ways to create, share, think, and dream.

The Magic Is Here!

The FIGMENT DC 2014 map is now available. There will be just a few maps around the event so print a copy or download it to your mobile device.

IMPORTANT ADDRESS INFORMATION: Online maps have spotty accuracy for the location of the event. Please note that the address is NOT 1900 S St. SE. Please use “Anacostia Park, Section E” as the address in your smartphone. The park is along the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail. Check out our Getting There page for all the specifics.

Bringing Art to FIGMENT?

Thank you to all of you who submitted your project for FIGMENT DC! We’re thrilled with the incredible variety and interactivity of your projects, and can’t wait to see you fill the fields and tree-filled spaces of Anacostia Park.

Did you miss the deadline? We still want you to join us at FIGMENT! After all, FIGMENT is all about Participation! (Really, it is.  Check out our 11 Principles.)

You’re welcome to show up the weekend of the event and come out to have fun with costumes, hoops, kites, games, and even your puppy, so long as he’s on a leash. At this time, since we’ve received our permit from the Capital Area National Park Service, and we want to stay on good terms with them, all unregistered projects may not include

  • Shade structures
  • Electricity or Water
  • Stage access
  • Food, drink or alcohol for sale or distribution
  • Corporate branding, flyer distribution, or anything for sale
  • Hanging items from trees (not allowed) or attaching items to park infrastructure (also not allowed)
  • Lengthy set-up time (more than 30 minutes)
  • Special transport requirements for set-up or take-down

If you have any questions, please review our Submit a Project or Artist FAQ pages for more information.

If your project has been accepted and you have questions about the logistics of the weekend, please contact your curator, keep your eyes open for email updates. Click here to see the list of this year’s artists!

Bring Your Art! Bring Your Laughter!

joust.jpgEver wanted to insert yourself into a live foosball table? Learn autobiographical storytelling? Make a wish and watch it grow into a flower? Have you been looking forward to charging your opponent in bike jousting? All of these opportunities and more will be at FIGMENT DC on September 27-28.
It’s time to prepare to bring your costumes, hoops, kites, games, and readiness to play. You can even still bring your own interactive art project -- as long as it doesn’t require any serious infrastructure (e.g. electricity, shade structures). If you have questions about it, please contact us right away! We encourage all sorts of unplanned creative participation. Also, don’t forget to bring a picnic lunch! A well-fed and hydrated artist is a happy artist. (Here are a few more suggestions of what to bring.)
We need you! We need you to laugh and play, and to have fun. But we also need people who can help with setup and breakdown, help artists get situated, welcome visitors, help keep the park tidy, and to be a core part of the team that makes FIGMENT happen. If that isn’t incentive enough, you’ll also get a cool t-shirt! Please sign up here.
We know how awesome FIGMENT is, and so should everyone else!

Centered around 11 fundamental principles—Participation, Decommodification, Inclusion, Self-Expression, Self-Reliance, Giving, Communal Effort, Civic Responsibility, Leave-no-trace, Immediacy, and Gratitude—FIGMENT DC calls for all manner of creative minds to submit their concept for a participatory artistic contribution to this year’s event. Artists are encouraged to think outside the box and create art with which anyone can engage and play. Previous projects have included inflatable art, social experiments, mobile art, street theatre, community building projects, sound art, workshops and seminars, music performance, as well as dance and motion art. FIGMENT DC seeks all forms of inclusive, active artistic work that thrive outside the confines of traditional museum space.

Everyone is invited to submit their concept for an art project to occur at FIGMENT DC, by filling out the submission form here:

Support FIGMENT DC 2014 - Donate Today!

Do you remember what first inspired you to get involved with FIGMENT DC? The excitement over sharing your art, your music, your vision, with a broader community? For us, FIGMENT is a day to change the rules for a few hours – to really come together as a community, break down boundaries, dive into our imaginations and see what can emerge. Thank you to those of you who give a great deal of your time, energy, creativity and more to bring this event to life. We thank you! We are so happy to share the magic of FIGMENT with you!

Today we're asking for financial donations, as we'll need to raise $9,200 by April 30th to bring FIGMENT back to Anacostia Park this September.

And this means we need your help.

Why support FIGMENT? We've been working hard to build new partnerships and engage new volunteers, and we're excited to witness the magic once again at Anacostia Park on September 27th and 28th. But as you know, FIGMENT is a completely grassroots effort, organized and run entirely by volunteers. It is completely free to the public. We don’t charge artists an entrance fee to bring their art to FIGMENT. We don’t sell tickets to the event. Moreover, FIGMENT is 100% non-commercial. We accept no corporate sponsorship and nothing is for sale, including the art. It's what makes FIGMENT special.

Our budget covers essential expenses associated with the event. You know, the fun things like National Park Service staff, security, permits, portajohn rentals, and all the various nuts and bolts that go into throwing a large scale public event. We’re sure that we could get all that stuff covered easily if we wanted to have giant beer advertisement banners up all over the park, but we’d rather see your art all around instead!
